Description:

While Qwirkle is as simple as matching colors and shapes, it is a game that also requires tactical maneuvers and well-planned strategy. The game consists of 108 wooden blocks with six different shapes in six colors. Using the blocks, players attempt to score the most points by building lines that share a common attribute--either shape or color. Qwirkle is a quick game to learn, but you'll soon discover that you'll need to think strategically in order to score the most points.

Our Review:

Qwirkle is a little like Set meets Scrabble. The rules are simple—-build rows of similar tiles for maximum points. Blocks can either be colored or patterned similarly. Lines of six tiles are called a Qwirkle and score a bonus. Add tiles to more than one line at a time, and the points start to add up. Complete more than one Qwirkle at a time, and the points multiply rapidly—-kind of like completing a whole row in the video game Tetris.

Qwirkle is a true family game, with flexibility to match most family situations. It allows 2 to 4 players, ages 6 and up. We have played this game with two adults, an adult and a six-year-old child, and as a whole family, and the game is fun in any combination, as advertised. Learning the rules was quick and easy, allowing us to dive right into the fun. It took us about ten minutes to read and digest the rules, and takes about 45 minutes to play, regardless of how many are playing.

There is no outside knowledge required to play, and the rules are simple enough that a child can easily grasp the game play. However, there is more strategy and interaction than first meets the eye—there is enough here to make repeated play interesting for adults too. No wonder this game won both the Parent’s Choice Foundation’s Gold Award and the Mensa Select competition. Here at BoardGameRatings.com, we heartily endorse Qwirkle as our Best Family Game Award winner for 2007.

Qwirkle rating: 4.5/5 stars Mike

What I like about this game is that it affords time to have a conversation with the other players. You don’t spend all of your time strategizing, planning, etc. Instead after playing a few rounds, the game just flows and you find yourself talking to the other players about other things. Its a great coffee game! Its not overly competitive but there is some strategy to it. There is also some excitement as you draw new tiles, hoping to get the one(s) you need. The pieces are wood based and have a nice look and feel to them. However, the game (at least the version I have) does not come with a tile bag or a rack for hiding tiles from other players (instead you need to stand them up). The fromer is no big deal as any cloth bag or similar can be used. The latter means that it is difficult to play on a carpeted surface, but will provide no issues playing on a table or other hard surface. Even with these minor issues this game is highly recommended, especially for families or couples! Also consider qwirkle cubes if you want a more indepth game.

Qwirkle rating: 5/5 stars Super fun!

We enjoyed playing Qwirkle when my Father-In-Law brought it to our house over the holidays. Our 8-year old got the hang of it quick, and it was fun to play with the family. We played with 5 people, and it was still fun! GREAT GAME!

Qwirkle rating: 5/5 stars Great fun game

We played with 4 players - 3 of which were new to the game. It took us playing one game with everyone's blocks showing to help strategize. Then it was a snap.

Qwirkle rating: 5/5 stars Fun game

We loved playing this game over the holidays. It was as fun for two players as it was for four. It is a bit challenging for adults as they try to strategize but also my young grandchildren could play. Versatile.
