Each player tries to guide their settlers to victory by clever building and trading. Building is based on resources that you gain based on where you build and the roll of the dice. Winner of the prestigious Spiel des Jahres award (German game of the year) in 1995, The Settlers of Catan has already carved out a place in the board game hall of fame as one of the best board games ever made. The reason it has been so popular is that it provides an excellent balance between luck and strategy, and it requires a high level of interaction, in the form of trading critical resources with your opponents, in order to achieve success in colonizing the island of Catan. The Settlers of Catan plays well with either three or four players, while an expansion set allows you to play with up to six players. Other expansion sets, such as The Seafarers of Catan or The Cities & Knights of Catan, add new elements (and more complexity) to the strategic aspect of the game.
One of the most interesting features of The Settlers of Catan is that the board consists of tiles that are pieced together randomly at the beginning of the game--thus the board is different each time you play. Another great aspect of the game is that every player is involved no matter whose turn it is, so there is rarely a dull moment. On top of all that, The Settlers of Catan is just plain fun--that is why I give it my highest recommendation.

 Great game
Excellent gateway game into European gaming. American gaming it would best be liked to Monopoly, but its not even close. Its an excellent game with great game pieces.

Best Game Ever
I've played over a half dozen games on this great website, and they are all fun but nothing is a fun as Catan. This is a boardgame that is just as fun for 3 or 5 players and plays out differently every single game. The right elements of luck, strategy, and smarts all go into the process of winning. There are so many different ways to win, it just never gets boring. I've been playing for 2 years and have yet to find another game quite like this one.

Greatest Bpard Game Ever Created.
I really appreaciate the Designer(s) of a game like this. It takes quite the mind to create such a interactive, fast paced and fun games. HOURS of fun packed into a small box. I have the Original version which is not as easy to setup and can be annoying if the peics get shifted around. Someone gave it to me for free because they didn't know how to play it.....If they only knew. This game is played with all my circle of friends and is very easy to learn.
Pick up this game whenever you can. You won't regret it.

Keep it simple
I have played this game since 2000. It is the greatest game by far and the Seafarers addition is a must. I love how the game board is always different. this is something that lacks in many games and should become a standard for strategy games.
"Cities and Knights" I feel over complicated the game and made is last too long.
Until cities and knights I had never seen a game that ended in under 50 minutes and was so enjoyable.

Personal Favorite
I've played a ton of board games and I always end up coming back to this one as being the most enjoyable and having the most replay value. Many college papers were put on hold while my roommates and I spent hours upon hours playing this game.
