Description:

More than a thousand years before the great city of Carcassonne was built, the area was settled by stone-age tribes. These people hunted wild animals, gathered nuts and berries, and caught fish in the nearby streams to provide themselves with the basics. Even today, there remain fantastic cave paintings and archaeological finds that provide evidence of their existence and give us an understanding of their lives. As with Carcassonne, the game of the year in Germany in 2001, the players play land tiles to create a beautiful landscape, with scattered wild animals like mammoths and saber-toothed tigers. They populate the landscape with hunters and gatherers and build huts to live in. Rivers, filled with fish, snake through the landscape. The game also includes rare, but very useful special cards. There are many new things to discover in this prehistoric Carcassonne. Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers is brand new, but retains the challenge, fun, and excitement of the original Carcassonne. Players who know Carcassonne will pick up this new game quickly. Others will learn it as quickly as players learned and loved the original.

Our Review:

This game is all about placing tiles strategically in order to achieve the greatest number of points. It's fairly relaxing and not highly competitive.

Carcassonne: Hunters & Gatherers rating: 5/5 stars Great fun!

My friends and family all agree that this game is better than the original, unless you play the original with all the expansions and then it's up for debate. Despite OT's reply, this game has tons of strategy... the randomness of the piece just allows for some element of luck, too. But any game involving dice would include the same. This game is simple enough for all to enjoy, but strategic enough for the hard core gamers to create a battle.

Carcassonne: Hunters & Gatherers rating: 5/5 stars Good Strategy

You may pick up the tiles randomly but it's all about where you place it and the placing of your men. There is strategy in every move you make - whether you move to screw up your oponent or add points to yourself. Every player is in the game till the end... This is an awesome game and very addicting!

Carcassonne: Hunters & Gatherers rating: 2/5 stars How can you strategise when the game is completely random?

Someone else wrote: "This game is all about placing tiles strategically in order to achieve the greatest number of points."

This is true other then every tile you pick is random. You can't see any tiles in advance so the game comes down to colpetely random drawing of tiles with very little strategy involved.

Carcassonne: Hunters & Gatherers rating: 5/5 stars Great on its own

Carcassonne--this is a great game. The puzzle pieces are well drawn out. Getting the bonuses are a must while playing the game...

Carcassonne: Hunters & Gatherers rating: 4/5 stars Good alternative to the original

Hunters and Gatherers is a different take on the original Carcassonne. The same basic elements are there (roads = rivers, forests = cities, etc.). However, there are new elements as well. There are ways to neutralize the opponent's "farmers" and rivers (same as roads in the original) can end in lakes and ponds that have fish in them (the more fish, the more points). This game allows you to be a little more aggressive than the original Carcassonne in ruining your opponent's plans. My advice would be to get this game if you want something more complex than Carcassonne and generally will use it as a two-player game. If you are more interested in playing with larger groups of people, I would suggest getting the original Carcassonne and all its expansions. That way, you can add more tiles to the game, which prevents four-, five-, or six-player games from ending too quickly. Also, if you get the original plus its expansions, you can vary the level of complexity by adding and removing expansions from the mix of tiles.
