Description:
The third installment in the GIPF project, following GIPF and TAMSK, Zèrtz is played with 5 white, 7 gray and 9 black marbles and 37 round tiles. The tiles are used to assemble the board; the marbles are in a pool. Each turn you must place one marble on the board and then remove a free tile. The aim is to capture 3 white, 4 gray, 5 black marbles or 2 marbles of each color. To capture you must jump with a marble over another marble. It sounds easy, but both players play with the same marbles and the board gets smaller with every move. Thus, the players are forced toward a situation where every move is a crucial one... when you create a trap for your opponent at the wrong moment, you may find yourself caught in the trap.

Another great strategy game from this 6-game series. This game, like the others, is very different from anyother game I have ever come across. Without a doubt, this game is a must have for all intelectual individuals.

Zertz is a deep and stimulating game that has held the interest of most of my friends who have tried it--my neighbor and I who moved apart, e.g., now play by email. The game dynamics are lively, it plays out in less than 20 minutes, and the endgame tends to dramatic brinksmanship. The components are a pleasure to handle and look at, made of Bakelite, a durable, old-fashioned plastic (think of antique billiards balls). Like go, Zertz requires some patience to get into--your first few games may seem bewildering. If you enjoy pure, simple, and deep games like go, give it a chance.

Maybe we didn't give it enough of a chance, but my roommate and I played about 5 games before becoming tired with it.
