Description:

Each player tries to be Caesar and then works to prove he is indeed Caesar by collecting fame points. The challenge is to intelligently allocate your eight rolled dice among the five buildings to acquire the fame you need to win the game. Clever Caesar would use these resources to conquer new provinces and assign suitable patricians to them, adding to his already enormous fame. Can you do the same? You will also need to show diplomacy in the senate and maybe visit the temple for some luck from Fortuna to win.

Although dice-rolling is luck-based, the options offered here go well beyond luck. You cannot control (well, sometimes you can, actually) the dice you get, but clever allocation of “bad” dice rolls can yield good results. When the dice allocation is done, the buildings are scored and another set begins.

At game end, the player with the most fame points.

Our Review:

Alea Iacta Est is the funnest game with a horrible title we have played in a long time--honestly, the title makes this game sound stuffy, or boring, or nerdy, or...something. But don't get scared off by the Latin name of this quick and colorful dice game. Alea Iacta Est is a fabulous game: easy to learn, fun to play, and versatile, supporting 2-5 players, ages 9 and up. It's a perfect family game with four or five players, but is just as fun with two--a nice quality for any game you add to your collection.

Players roll dice and allocate them in ancient Roman buildings in a bidding contest to gain whatever benefits that building offers. They win Provinces (territories) and Patricians (citizens) which must be matched together to maximize points at game end. They visit the Senate to gain cards giving special bonuses based on provinces and patricians gathered. Fortuna's temple offers chances to gain bonus points. And don't forget the Latrina (public bath) where the odds and ends of unused dice end up.

This game is really a lot of fun. There are enough different dynamics at play to make it interesting, yet it is light enough to learn and play quickly. The artwork is fun and the game pieces are colorful. Alea Iacta Est is a great game for the whole family. We highly recommend it as one of the recipients of our 2010 "Recommended Family Game" award.

Alea Iacta Est rating: 5/5 stars Title Isn

I can't believe you dissed the great title of this game! I laughed out loud when I saw it. What a perfect name for a board game! Of course you need to understand what it means: The Die Is Cast. (What Caesar said when he marched his army across the Rubicon - ok that part is geeky, but I love the cover art with Caesar playfully tossing the dice.)
