Description:
2000 BC. A new empire is about to emerge in the north of Mesopotamia.
Nomadic tribes gather under the leadership of Assur, a city-state dedicated to the cult of the powerful mountain god. But life in the desert is precarious, and before ruling the world, one must first learn to survive… Players take the role of the chiefs of nomadic tribes. They travel the desert to find food and build wells and ziggurats. During the three reigns which make up the game, they try to spread the domination of their tribe over Assyria.

Our Review:
Assyria is a fabulous civilization-building game that makes great use of theme, strategy, and some luck. In Assyria you must balance short-term and long-term objectives to come off victorious: should you build your huts between the rivers for maximum points, dig wells for bonuses, or add another layer to one of your ziggurats? Should you make an offering to the Gods, who reward you only at the end, or cozy up to the dignitaries in hopes of an immediate boost? Prepare for floods and famine and carefully manage your crops--your choices now determine your possibilities later.
Assyria is a "many paths to victory" game that offers a lot of depth in the strategies that can be employed. Its combination of careful planning and the luck of the harvest seem appropriate to the theme of building a lasting civilization. The components are good quality and fun to play with, and the artwork is great.
Assyria is for 2-4 players ages 12 and up, so it's not for the youngest gamers in the family. It takes a good while to digest the rule booklet, and a game or two to really comprehend the options available. But those who dive into this ancient world of feast and famine will find themselves deliciously wrapped up in a rich and challenging game that will reward their planning and calculated risk-taking. We give Assyria our highest recommendation as our 2010 "Best Strategy Game" award recipient. Try it. You'll love it.
