Our Review:
Fits is one of the newest--and funnest--offerings from master game designer Reiner Knizia. One to four players can play Fits, each with their own set of fun little plastic puzzle peices and a board to place them on. Each player is given a different starting piece, and from there they each use the same piece shown on the latest card turned over. Thus, each player’s puzzle ends up different because of the difference in the first piece, but other than that they each have the same pieces in the same order to work with.
It is true that Fits looks a lot like the classic computer game Tetris, and it is similar in many ways, but it goes a lot farther. First of all, in Fits there are many more shapes to work with, and no two shapes (in each player's pieces) are alike, so you will have one chance each round to play each piece.
Another difference is that in Fits, pieces may only be slid straight down from the top; they cannot be moved to the side. This minor rule change makes constructing your puzzle much more challenging than Tetris, but the real fun comes in the scoring.
There are four different "levels," a different one played in each round. Each level calls for sliding a different pattern underneath the transparent sleeve that the pieces are played on. There is a dot or symbol on the pattern for each space that the pieces can cover. In all four rounds, any "holes" left in the puzzle result in a negative point for each dot showing.
In Round one, players score one point for each complete line (the board is six squares wide). In round two, players score a certain number of points for each square left uncovered that shows a point value rather than a dot. In round three, the some point values on the pattern are positive, and some are negative. Thus, in addition to leaving certain squares open, they have an extra incentive to cover the negative point values. In round four there are several sets of two matching symbols: leaving both uncovered earns points, leaving only one uncovered loses points.
Fits is very quick to learn and offers a lot of flexibility. The four different rounds offer varying strategies and levels of difficulty. You can play as many or as few as you want. Since there is no direct player interaction, this can also be played solitaire, a nice touch. Fits is one of those rare games where kids can compete with adults, and can thus be enjoyed by the whole family.
Our only criticism is that there isn’t any direct player interaction—just competition—but the game play is light enough that conversation is natural during game play. In fact, you are likely to find yourself offering suggestions to the other players once you find a great fit for a piece in your own puzzle. Fits is a nice filler for a quick play, but is fun enough to play all four rounds several times in a row. The game components are attractive and are of excellent quality. All these factors combine to make Fits an instant family favorite (my kids love it) and one of my personal favorite new games. We highly recommend adding Fits to your family game lineup.
