Our Review:

Reels and Deals: The Movie-Making Card Game has a fun theme, where players take the role of movie producer and attempt to assemble the right director, script, actors, and actresses to successfully pull off a box office hit. The cards representing people are usually caricatures of famous actors and actresses. The artwork and theme are both fun and are probably the strong point of Reels and Deals.

There isn’t much interaction between players for a card game—most of the turns consist of trying to draw the right cards at the right times, so there is a heavy luck component here. That said, there are plenty of decisions to be made, such as deciding which actors and actresses to hire, based on bonuses or penalties they carry, as well as special bonuses that can be earned by getting the right combinations of cards for a movie. The sequence that ends of the game seems a little contrived, and can occur relatively quickly depending on which script cards are drawn in which order.

Luck definitely plays a big role in Reels and Deals, since it can be very easy or very difficult to get the cards needed to fulfill script requirements. The concept of selling and buying cards takes a little of the randomness out of the game, although we did not utilize this feature of the game very often in our play testing.

Most cards have a “special rule” of some kind which complicates the game a little bit, and can make strictly following the rules hard to remember. On the positive side, the special rules provide opportunities for luck to intervene while enhancing the strategic possibilities.

Reels and Deals is a light game that should provide great entertainment for small groups who want to play something that has a great theme, while preserving a social atmosphere.
