Our Review:
In Nefertiti, one of the year's best strategy games, each player is a servant of the king, sending your own servants out to the open markets in order to procure the most unique and lavish gifts for the queen’s birthday. The closer you can get to having a monopoly on a particular type of gift, the more your haul is worth.
The city has eight different markets, three of which will be open at any given time. Players take turns placing servants on open market spaces, thus placing bids on having the first choice for the goods the market has to offer. When certain “closing conditions” are met, which are unique for each market, the market closes and players then take turns (in order of their bids) collecting gifts from the market or collecting money put into the market. Thus, you can either try to gain the gifts you want most, or you can “pass” on gifts and collect money, giving you higher bidding power in future rounds.
There are various “character” cards that can be purchased using tokens collected from markets. These characters give you special abilities, such as stealing a gift from an opponent, and learning to utilize their various powers adds a lot of interest to the game.
Nefertiti has quite a few play options to learn, which gives players an interesting array of strategic angles to pursue. It will likely take more than one or two games to begin to feel like you have mastered the various options available, but you can have a lot of fun in the process of learning this game--there's not really much "rule overload" during the first game. Nefertiti has enough depth to remain interesting for a long time.
Nefertiti’s game mechanics provide an interesting combination of thoughtful strategy, a little luck based on how the gift cards play out on the various markets, and a high level of interaction with the other players through bidding on items and using the character cards while trying to garner monopolies for higher points. Luck definitely takes a deep back seat to nimble strategy adjustments, and the pace of the game is relatively fast, keeping all players involved.
The artwork in Nefertiti is beautiful with an attractive game board and interesting cards, and the theme is fun (though we wished we had a pronunciation guide for the Egyptian names!). The game components are good quality overall.
Nefertiti makes a nice family game, although it is probably too complicated for younger players (below the suggested age limit of 10). Groups of three or four players will be delighted with this game. We give Nefertiti our Recommended Strategy Game award for 2008.
