Description:
The hanging gardens were one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world, as all history courses teach. But, did they actually exist? Nothing remains of their reported splendor, which was built for the eyes of Amyitis.
Without an exact reference to follow, the 2-4 players will re-establish the hanging gardens according to their own tastes.
Card follows card with magnificent buildings, sparkling fountains, and exotic plants as the players work to rebuild the legendary gardens.
In the end, the queen will be pleasd and rewards the victory palm to the player whose work on the gardens most impresses her highness.

Our Review:
The charm of The Hanging Gardens comes in its fairly unique combination of a tile collecting game with a spatial puzzle. Players compete to build the most impressive gardens by drawing cards with various shapes and components on them and laying cards out in their own private design areas, trying to group like components together. You are always free to lay one card on top of another, erasing previously laid components with new layers (hence, the gardens “hang” at different levels). Think of this as being a little like Tetris in a card game.
When a player has enough grouped components, she can place one of several temples on that group and collect a tile from a choice of six available tiles. Sets of like tiles score the players points and determine the winner. Combine mutually-supporting sets of tiles and multiply your scores even higher.
The Hanging Gardens supports two to four players, ages eight and up, so it offers a great deal of flexibility. The time to play will be similar no matter how many players there are, since the game ends after the supply of collectible tiles is exhausted. We found in our play testing that our younger kids enjoyed the puzzle aspects of this game a lot and were able to grasp the game concepts quickly and compete with the adults. It is light but thoughtful fare with a healthy mix of skill and luck, and should appeal to those who enjoy games like the Carcassonne series.
We endorse The Hanging Gardens as one of the most interesting and enjoyable games of the year, and give it our Recommended Strategy Game Award for 2008.
