Fabulous caves containing the artistic legacy or our ancient ancestors were discovered in a cave complex at Lascaux in the southwest of France. In testament to their struggle for survival, our forefathers created these stunning images that capture your imagination. Fantastic paintings of large animals long extinct leap from the walls of these caves--animals known only from fossils and seen only in dreams.

In the game Lascaux, you try to win majorities of animal cards by spending stones at the right moment and cleverly outfoxing other players. Explore the meeting of art and history, in the caves of Lascaux!

Each copy of Lascaux contains:
54 playing cards (the animals)
50 stones
30 cardboard tokens (5 sets of 6 tokens)
1 rules booklet

Our Review:

Lascaux is a light bidding game in which players try to gain a majority stake in collecting various types of cave art, supposedly modeled after the ancient paintings from the cave in France with the same name. Lascaux has very simple rules, is easily learned, and can be played quickly with a high degree of interaction between players. Three to five players ages 8 and up can enjoy this game together. All these factors combined make Lascaux an ideal family game.

There are six different cave animals, and players get points at the end of the game for each type of animal which they hold more copies of than any other player. Six or seven cards are placed out for bidding, containing two color swatches each. Players look at which animals can be collected with each color, and place a token stating the color they are trying to collect for this round. The player who wins the bid takes all the cards containing her color first, with the next runner up taking any cards left that contain his color, and so on until all cards have been taken.

Players are given shiny shell pieces (fun to play with on their own) to bid with, and during bidding, players can choose to opt out at any time, collecting all the shells bid so far, but earning a lower position in card collection. All spoils from bidding (both shells and cards collected) are placed out in the open so all players can see which animals the other players are going for and how many shells they have to bid with.

There is a high sense of interaction in Lascaux, both from the bidding process and because the money supply is constantly changing hands between players as they attempt to outbid each other to get the cards they want. In addition, the public nature of each player’s money and collected cards enhances the interactive feeling.

Lascaux is an ideal family game—the kind that can be played quickly once, or played multiple times to fill up as much time as you have, and staying light enough to sustain casual conversation. We highly enjoy and highly recommend Lascaux as an addition to your family’s game library, and give it our Recommended Family Game award for 2008.
