Description:
Important note from Publisher - Agricola component error: it says you should receive 33 clay discs in the rules, however, that is wrong - you should only get 27.
****Please note the animeeples promotion was only offered through Z-Man Games directly. The version we carry will NOT include the animeeples.**
In Agricola (Latin for "farmer"), you're a farmer in a wooden shack with your spouse and little else. On a turn, you get to take only two actions, one for you and one for the spouse, from all the possibilities you'll find on a farm: collecting clay, wood or stone; building fences; and so on. You might think about having kids in order to get more work accomplished, but first you need to expand your house. And what are you going to feed all the little rugrats?
Agricola is a turn-based game. There are 14 game turns plus 6 harvest phases (after turn 4, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 14). Each player starts with two playing tokens (farmer and wife) and thus can take two actions per turn. There are multiple options, and while the game progresses, you'll have more and more: first thing in a turn, a new action card is flipped over.Problem: Each action can be taken just once per turn, so it's important to do some things with high preference. Each player also starts with a hand of 7 Occupation cards (of more than 160 total) and 7 Minor Improvement cards (of more than 140 total) that he may use during the game if they fit in his/her strategy. This amounts to countless strategies, some depending on your card hand. Sometimes it's a good choice to stay on course, sometimes you better react on what your opponents do.
Agricola can also be played without cards (family game) and can even be played solo.
Contents: 360 cards, over 300 wooden components, 50+ tiles, 9 boards, tokens, scoring pad.

As former game store owner and die hard gamer I can honestly say this is one of the best games out there. While it seems to lack the simplicity of Settlers or Carcassonne because of all the pieces and cards, it really isn't that complex. The cards give the game a depth that Settlers and Carcassonne lack. The cards make it so that there are lots of different ways to play and win the game.
My wife is a casual gamer and she is the one that one that talked me into this game. I'm glad she did and so is she because it's the one game that she routinely wins.

| Make no mistake: this is a HUGE game...
AGRICOLA is definitely not for the faint hearted. In terms os resource management games, this is some sort of The Ultimate Challenge. Yes, it is difficult to learn (but not impossible, otherwise it would not be the success it is). It's rare for a rule book to explicitly advise with determination: PLEASE: play the easy (family) version first!"
The box is huge and heavy, the amount of components, boards and cards also. But the thematic could not be any simpler, but it works pretty.
Go for AGRICOLA if you want to play a really challenging Eurogame.

This is a great strategy game that is different every time. I have played it with super-gamers (of which I am not) and it was great fun for everyone.

| Different Every Time You Play
When my wife and I first got this we thought it was a cruel practical joke as there enough pieces and rules for several 'normal' board games. However once we had a go we realized it was not as complex as it first looked and in fact, having so many cards and options means that there is huge variety in playing it, plus it has a couple of other great features that make it stand out from the crowd in terms of strategy, namely:
Each action can only be used once per turn, so you are forced to choose between what you need most and what you think other people are not going to pick
You can grow you family, which means you get more actions per round, but then you have to feed them which means you use actions to do that and it is very finely balanced
It has limited turns and there are just enough so that you always think, just one more round and I'd be sorted
Anyway, great game, must have played it a dozen times in the last 4 weeks and I normally get bored of games very quickly.

| Great game for The entire family!
Our kids were 10 and 11 when we brought this game home after playing it and buying it at Gencon 2007. They didn't do very well at first but BEG to play it again and again. After a year of owning the game they give us a run for our money. This is a great game with lots of options for playing depending on the number of people. We often take it to game night with our friends and play 5 players. It is a great game for everyone.
It does have alot of peices and alot of turn nuiances. Once you play it for the first time it is easy to get the hang of. My kids can set it up without me.
This games ranks high in my book and stands with great games such as Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, and Powergrid.
If you could only take one game home this year. Take Agricola.

| Who would have known
This is a great strategy game. The rules seem complex at first but once play commences it all makes sense. My wife and I have played it several times and are enjoying more each time. This is one of the most popular games of last year and came highly recommended by the gaming community. We are glad we listened.
