Description:
It is time of awakening. The position of the king is secure, but the high aristocrats, the Grandes, look to expand their influence. Thus, intrigue fills the country! Their primary weapons are the attendants to the king: the Caballeros. Each Grande has his favorites, recruited from the provinces, which he deploys to accumulate the power he so desires. Fencing, not with the sword, but with cunning and deceit, the Grandes struggle for power, sending the Caballeros openly into the regions and secretly to the Castillo. Although this strategic game requires subtle strategies, it is easy to learn and comes with an introduction that ensures a fast entrance into the game. We have produced a game that is both beautiful and practical, making the game a pleasure to play every time.

| No luck, all strategy!
There is hardly any luck involved. It is almost pure strategy. Great game. Very smart!

| Hard to Explain - Easy To Play
I got the special edition of this game at Christmas (including all the expansions) and even though I'm a seasoned gamer, it looked very complex. However, with the help of the "Sample Game" provided, I was able to pick it up and explain it to others.
The first game was a bit of a struggle (not least because we played after a hectic day of partying) but on playing it again the next day, all five players agreed it was a fun and challenging experience. I've not played this since, but plan to when I get the opportunity.
I especially like the board design and the innovations such as the tower (castillo) where you can "hide" scoring pieces (caballeros). The way that you "buy" cards to improve your position (or hinder others) adds an extra dimension to the game and leads to interesting situations where the strength of a player or region can be twisted and made into a weakness.
Having read the rules for the expansion packs, I can't ever see myself playing them: the basic game is complex enough and at just the right level in terms of pace. You can play this game with "non-gamers" though I certainly think it would be difficult to play with young children.
Overall, this is an excellent game with novel strategies and excellent production.

| Great game
This game was great when I played it several years ago. Nowadays, more great games come out and seem to be more in depth. This is a great game for those who play a bunch of simple games and want to start to learn more complicated point-earning games with some strategy. For those who are already veterans to the strategy games and are looking for something new, this game will satisfy you for about 3 tries and then you'll want something else more fullfilling. This game is best played with as many players you can get to play.
