Our Review:
If you enjoy games like Connect Four, you should have fun playing Cover Up. This is a 2-player, tick-tack-toe-style game where the winning player tries to get four-in-a-row on a 5x5 flat grid. The trick here is that it is possible to put up to 3 pieces on each space in the grid. Smaller pieces can be covered up by larger pieces. Each player must use his small, medium, and large pieces wisely to create traps and block opponents. Unlike its predecessors, Cover Up allows you to move pieces previously placed, which may or may not expose a previously covered piece and thwart your plans.
Comparing this to tick-tack-toe is not really fair, because Cover Up is infinitely more interesting. There are many different ways to trap your opponent, including using multiple layers of piece stacking, and many strategies for blocking. It is highly likely that players will become intrigued and may find themselves addicted to Cover Up, playing 10 or more games in a session. The strategy revolves around (1) learning the relative values of the different piece sizes and how to use them, and (2) remembering what pieces have been covered up. The only weakness we found was that similarly to tick-tack-toe, if a player can keep a piece in the space at the center of the board, she maintains a huge advantage over the other player. That said, the game is still fairly deep and players will find themselves switching between offense and defense a surprising number of times.
