Description:
Strive to land on the most precious gems, and hang on for a ride. The roll of the dice determines your moves, but your strategy determines your fate.
Meanwhile, the other players will keep coming and they will not stop. They want those precious gems, and will stop at nothing to get them. Nothing is certain until you roll a “Gemlok”. Even then, each player must secure eight gems, and will encounter significant player strategy along the way before securing their fortune.
Players may find themselves forced to lock in a low value gem or none at all. Avoid being bumped by other players, and don’t hesitate to bump them first. There is also the strategy of bumping oneself into a more favorable position. So much fun, interaction and strategy built into Gemlok. Enjoy your Family and Friends as you play Gemlok, and HAVE FUN!

Our Review:
Gemlok is an abstract strategy game (like Chinese Checkers, but with dice adding some luck), and involves moving pawns to the most strategic positions possible on the board. Unique dice are rolled that show various moving patterns, and the players try to make the best strategic moves based on the available patterns. The object of the game is to move your pawns onto game board squares containing the highest value gems to score the maximum number of points. The aspect of “bumping” your opponents’ pawns, as well as strategically “bumping” your own pawns, adds an interesting dynamic to the game and adds a lot of fun.
The game is for 2 to 4 players, ages 7 and up, though the moving pattern aspect of the game may be a little complex for younger players. Specifically, understanding available move possibilities was sometimes difficult for adult players, and errors can easily be made, resulting in illegal moves. With a little practice, the various moving patterns can be learned, and your focus can shift from ensuring that the patterns are properly followed, back to the various strategies of the game, where it belongs.
Learning the game took about 10 minutes, and the first time we played, we completed two games of about 20 minutes each, with two players. More players will directly lengthen the time it takes to play, as will the thinking time required to examine possible moves and strategies as you play the game more. With a rather short playing time, often one game will not be satisfying, and you will want to play multiple games. There is plenty of strategy involved in this game, and like other abstract strategy games, players should be able to advance their level of play with practice, making this game interesting to play again and again. This game is a Mensa Select winner and a Games Magazine Best Family Game nominee.
