Description:
While Qwirkle is as simple as matching colors and shapes, it is a game that also requires tactical maneuvers and well-planned strategy. The game consists of 108 wooden blocks with six different shapes in six colors. Using the blocks, players attempt to score the most points by building lines that share a common attribute--either shape or color. Qwirkle is a quick game to learn, but you'll soon discover that you'll need to think strategically in order to score the most points.

Our Review:
Qwirkle is a little like Set meets Scrabble. The rules are simple—-build rows of similar tiles for maximum points. Blocks can either be colored or patterned similarly. Lines of six tiles are called a Qwirkle and score a bonus. Add tiles to more than one line at a time, and the points start to add up. Complete more than one Qwirkle at a time, and the points multiply rapidly—-kind of like completing a whole row in the video game Tetris.
Qwirkle is a true family game, with flexibility to match most family situations. It allows 2 to 4 players, ages 6 and up. We have played this game with two adults, an adult and a six-year-old child, and as a whole family, and the game is fun in any combination, as advertised. Learning the rules was quick and easy, allowing us to dive right into the fun. It took us about ten minutes to read and digest the rules, and takes about 45 minutes to play, regardless of how many are playing.
There is no outside knowledge required to play, and the rules are simple enough that a child can easily grasp the game play. However, there is more strategy and interaction than first meets the eye—there is enough here to make repeated play interesting for adults too. No wonder this game won both the Parent’s Choice Foundation’s Gold Award and the Mensa Select competition. Here at BoardGameRatings.com, we heartily endorse Qwirkle as our Best Family Game Award winner for 2007.
