Description:
This game re-lives the fierce competition between the two great Florentine families: Medici and Strozzi. The players compete to buy the best goods, load them on their ships, and sail away to sell them for great profits. The mechanism is similar to Medici, but for two players.

Our Review:
Medici vs. Strozzi is a two-player variant of the popular game Medici, by Reiner Knizia. In this game, two players compete to maximize their profits in trading goods at sea ports, by capturing the largest trades at each port and establishing monopolies on certain goods. Rounds play out as a player takes goods from a draw pile and then offers a single price for the goods. His opponent has the option of purchasing the goods at that price; if he refuses, then the player who offered them must buy them at the stated price. Goods are loaded onto trading ships, which then dock at one of three harbors. Depending on which goods are docked at which harbor, points are scored, and money is awarded to the players for the next round.
There is a lot of strategy in this game, with much of it involving price calculations for bidding, but after playing it once players should have an adequate gut feel for the value to set for goods during the bidding sequences. A little calculation yields better estimates, but the variance between players’ styles and the randomness of drawing the tiles discourages over-analysis. Players will have most fun if they think a little, but not too hard. The rules are relatively simple, and it took us about 15 minutes to read them and setup the first time. Game play could last between 30 minutes and 60 minutes, depending on how deeply players want to think through the purchasing strategy. The game pieces are good quality, but the artwork is nothing to shout about. Medici vs. Strozzi is a themed game, but in the end its appeal is that it is highly strategic and provides plenty of food for thought. It offers a lot of fun, and comes with a strong endorsement as our Recommended 2-Player Game for 2007.
