Description:
In Colosseum you are a Roman impresario - producing great spectacles in your arena in the hope of attracting the most spectators to your events. You'll earn wealth and glory for each event you run, using it to build ever more ambitious events. Attract the most spectators to one of your events and you'll be granted the title of Grand Impresario, with tales of your extraordinary spectacles acclaimed throughout the empire.
However, to produce larger events that will attract more spectators, you will need to build up your arena's infrastructure.

Our Review:
Colosseum is a uniquely-themed game set in ancient Rome, in which players attempt to gather resources to produce entertaining shows in their arenas. Players draw bigger crowds by putting on more spectacular shows, expanding their arenas, and by having Roman dignitaries attend their events. The player whose show draws the largest spectator crowd on any of the five rounds of the game wins the game. Playing Colosseum involves managing resources carefully, out-bidding opponents in auctions, and bartering between players. The interaction between players is heavy and results in a lot of fun and conversation during game play. There are several different paths to victory and multiple strategies may be used depending on the luck of the draw and the temperament of other players. Colosseum takes about 50 minutes to learn and 90-120 minutes to play, for 3-5 players.
When we first played Colosseum, we kept asking ourselves “Who in the world would ever think of a game like this?” The team of Wolfgang Kramer and Markus Lubke is the answer--they have constructed a wonderfully rich gaming experience that thoroughly draws you into the play. This is important, because it took us a full 50 minutes to punch out the game pieces and read through the well-written rules (be sure to use the provided guide that shows where to put each type of piece in the game box). This rather daunting one-time task left us feeling a little overwhelmed before our first game, especially because we had some rather inexperienced gamers with us. However, we were glad to discover that the rather complex rules actually make sense and flow together well into a comprehensive, fun experience that everyone enjoyed.
There is a LOT of strategy in Colosseum, much of which will not be apparent the first time playing, but enough of the game play is intuitive that after the first round players should have a good feel for it. For being as complex as it is, Colosseum has a surprisingly wide appeal, though a player who is not interested in doing a little bartering or does not care to try to internalize the many rules probably won’t enjoy it. Colosseum is one of those games that left us thinking and talking about it for several hours after our first time playing, and feeling excited to come back for more. The strong theme, great artwork, and high-quality game components follow in the tradition of so many games published by Days of Wonder. Colosseum has the honor of being the 2007 Recommended Strategy Game at BoardGameRatings.com, and comes with a high recommendation, with the important caveat that it does take more time and effort to learn than most of the games we review. This is a true gamer’s game that maintains broad appeal because the theme is great, the board and pieces are beautiful, and game play is interactive and fun.
