Description:

1598. Yspahan the Fair becomes the capital of the Persian Empire. Thus, being placed at the center of the world, the city enjoys a period of cultural and economic blossoming. The cities and villages of the region intend to take advantage of this expansion. Caravans loaded with goods and jewels set out for the desert, bearing the promises of a radiant future.

The players embody merchants trading with Yspahan. Meaning to take advantage of the coming of the Shah's Supervisor, they score points by placing their goods in the right shops, by sending them to the Caravan, and by constructing buildings. At the end of the game, the player with the highest score is the winner.

Our Review:

Yspahan involves building a marketplace in an ancient city and funneling your supplies to the market and onto the traveling caravan, all to earn points. The themes are fun, and the game board and the caravan are visually appealing, and the miniature camels are fun to play with. There is a rather interesting and unique usage of dice in Yspahan that makes play fun and varied. Yspahan is one of the best European-style games of the year, and was a runner-up for the prestigious Spiel des Jahres award in 2007.

There are many different ways to earn points in Yspahan, and the strategies have a nice mix between obvious and subtle. It took us a full 30 minutes to read through the rules, and our first game went quite a bit slower than the next one because we were digesting the rules and learning the strategies as we went along. It took us almost 2 hours to play with four players during our first game (the game supports either 3 or 4 players). Once the rules are learned, play time for Yspahan is from 60 to 90 minutes if players don’t dilly-dally too much on strategic planning during their own turns—-here is plenty of time for that during others’ turns. Yspahan advertises itself as being for players age 8 and up, but most 8-year-old players would have a hard time remembering all the rules and grasping the game. We recommend ages 10 and up.

Yspahan is definitely one of the most intriguing games we have reviewed in 2007. The rules are rather complex, but the game flow involves enough intuition that the rules can be learned and remembered without too much effort. After the first time we played Yspahan, everyone wanted to play again, and we found ourselves thinking about it and discussing it over the next several days. Yspahan’s major drawbacks are the time to learn the rules and the lack of a good 2-player option, but, as Settlers of Catan has proven, non-two-player games can become wildly popular and get plenty of use. Yspahan is good, themed fun with interesting twists and strategies that will leave you wanting to play it again and again.
