Description:
In Settlers of Catan, groups of settlers try to become the dominant group on a remote island by building settlements and cities across its uncharted wilderness. Each player tries to guide their settlers to victory by clever building and trading. Building is based on resources that you gain based on where you build and the roll of the dice. This combination of strategy and luck makes Settlers an excellent game for players of all skill levels.

Our Review:
Winner of the prestigious Spiel des Jahres award (German game of the year) in 1995, The Settlers of Catan has already carved out a place in the board game hall of fame as one of the best board games ever made. The reason it has been so popular is that it provides an excellent balance between luck and strategy, and it requires a high level of interaction, in the form of trading critical resources with your opponents, in order to achieve success in colonizing the island of Catan. The Settlers of Catan plays well with either three or four players, while an expansion set allows you to play with up to six players. Other expansion sets, such as The Seafarers of Catan or The Cities & Knights of Catan, add new elements (and more complexity) to the strategic aspect of the game.
One of the most interesting features of The Settlers of Catan is that the board consists of tiles that are pieced together randomly at the beginning of the game--thus the board is different each time you play. Another great aspect of the game is that every player is involved no matter whose turn it is, so there is rarely a dull moment. On top of all that, The Settlers of Catan is just plain fun--that is why I give it my highest recommendation.

FUN GAME!
I bought this game awhile back based on reviews & didn't play it until vacation. On vacation I played with my 3 kids (16,14,12) non stop. We loved it.

Best game ever!
My wife's college roommate taught us how to play five years ago. Since then, we've taught probably over 30 of our friends how to play and we're all addicted. Never the same game twice. So many twists and turns. Make enemies and friends and everyone has their own house rules! Easily played over 1000 times and not sick of it yet!

Always new, never boring!
We are totally addicted to this game and have managed to addict most of our friends and family. What I love about it is that it is different every time, there are multiple ways to accumulate points so you always have a way to win, and you're involved even on other players' turns. We love it!

The Game
I am not a "gamer" really, my gaming experiences are limited to risk, which I loathe for it's boringness, scrabble (Fun if you play it with the right people), Monopoly (monotonous), chess (fun, if you don't think for 10 minutes on one turn) etc... I extremely enjoy this game, but it can get boring if you play it over and over and over, such as my family has done with it. We played it almost every night for 3 months before buying the expansion "Knights of Catan". By then I was sick of it, which, I think we all would be. So, if you are going to buy a board game, buy this one!

Possibly the top of my board game list
Why is this game so great? Even though you are competing with other players, you are still largely in control of your own play. You must strategize with different commodities as well as geography, yet its still simple enough to be fun. The game does not take too long to play, and the ever-changing board means this game will never grow old.
Also its fun to make jokes about wood and sheep.
