Description:
The sun is going down and dusk is slowly descending upon Baghdad's silhouette. The shadows in the alleyways are getting longer and becoming darker. The Bazaar slowly empties and the honourable citizens of this desert metropolis make their way home. This is the time when Ahmed and his men go about their business. They have planned a big mission for this night. They want steal no less than 4 treasures from the palaces to leave no-one in any doubt--there is only one thief of Baghdad!

Our Review:
Thief of Baghdad involves moving teams of guards and thieves in and out of city palaces, hauling off treasure in a race against your opponents. Thief of Baghdad is an excellent strategy game—it is elegantly simple, yet interesting enough to bring you back again and again. The mix of strategy and luck is just about right. In our opinion, Thief of Baghdad is at the top of this year’s European-style games because it is quick to learn and quick to play (it took us 20 minutes to learn, and 45 minutes on average to play), without sacrificing the interesting strategies and fun themes that Euro-style games are known for. There is a nice interaction between players that keeps things unpredictable. Thief of Baghdad is a Spiel des Jahres Finalist for 2007.
Thief of Baghdad is for 2 to 4 players, ages 8 and up. With a considerably smaller-than-usual set of rules, Thief of Baghdad can be enjoyed by much younger players than most Euro-style games. We must say, however, that the English translation of the rules was pretty poorly done, providing more than one moment of confusion and amusement. With a better translation of the rules, it probably would have taken only 10 or 15 minutes to learn. (If you happen to get the same set of rules as we did, just know that the “hidden” cards are simply the face-down draw pile, and the “exterior” guards are simply any guards that are not your own—neutral guards or guards of another player. Also, the thieves are either “in” or “out” of the palace—there are not two different locations in the palace for thieves to be placed in, as seems to be suggested by the poor translation of the rules.)
Thief of Baghdad is an excellent 2-player game. The play balance works so well with 2 players that we were tempted to make this game a runner-up for our Best Two-Player Game Award of 2007, but we allowed that award to go to an exclusively 2-player game instead. But the versatility of the number of players, like Carcassonne, makes Thief of Baghdad an excellent choice to add to your collection. Because of the relative ease of learning and relatively quick play time, this game also seemed to fit into the Best Family Game Award category, but in the end we kept Thief of Baghdad in the Best Strategy Game Award category where it probably best fits, as our Best Strategy Game of 2007.
The artwork for Thief of Baghdad is nicely rendered and the game components are visually appealing and of good quality. This is definitely one of the best games of 2007, and we highly recommend it.
