Description:
Puerto Rico's golden age returns. Through you! Players travel now to the capital city of this beautiful island. Who will build the most important buildings? Build palaces, poor houses, silver smelters, gold mines, and many other--each with its own special features. The cleverest player will build well and win!
San Juan is based on the highly acclaimed and awarded Puerto Rico, but is a separate card game that anyone can play whether they have played Puerto Rico or not.

Our Review:
Themed on the commercial capital of Puerto Rico, San Juan, a BoardGameRatings.com Recommended Strategy Game, is a strategic card game in which players work to establish the most prosperous city on the island. In order to do so, they must produce and sell goods in order to earn enough money to raise buildings. Each building is worth a certain amount of victory points at the end of the game. The player with the highest amount of points is declared the winner.
San Juan feels like the younger brother of Puerto Rico--one of the best strategy games ever made. Although the games share similar concepts and themes, San Juan stands on its own as an enjoyable game in its own right. It also plays faster and is less complex than Puerto Rico. One of the most appealing aspects of the game is that it plays very well with two, three, or four players. San Juan's richness and strategic depth make it a great choice for your next game night.

| Quick Fix
San Juan is great if you want a quick "Puerto Rico" fix. It is not as good in my book, but it still better than 90% of games out there and can be played very well with 2 people.

| A staple of our game group.
Quick to learn, quick to play but with suprising longevity. We play it as nice break from larger more epic games. It's got enough variety to keep us coming back for more. It's a great game, especially for the cost!

| Puerto Rico for Two Players!
This game is not as good as Puerto Rico. But it is the only way to get the concept and strategy of Puerto Rico into a two-player game. It is also much more portable than Puerto Rico--take it on long road trips to liven up your evenings in motels in the middle of nowhere. In comparison to Puerto Rico, this game requires a bit more discipline and deliberate choices--making a choice will foreclose the possibility of making other choices. Since the cards serve as production facilities, goods, victory points, money, etc. all at the same time. Thus, if you use a card as money to pay for something, you give up the chance of using it as a production facility. This factor makes the game a little more intense and frustrating (in a good way). If you haven't played Puerto Rico, try that first. Then try San Juan--it will make more sense.
