Our Review:
One of the longest-living board games around, monopoly thrives on the greed of its players. My frustration with the game lies in the amount of luck success requires, and the extremely slow extinction of players makes the game too long.

Home Rules Rule!
Hard to understand why this site rated this game so poorly; sure there is a bit of luck in purchasing property, but that's where negotiations and strategic trading come into play as the game progresses.
Some great house rules to play with: All payments to bank (i.e. taxes) are collected in the middle of the board and rewarded to the player who lands on Free Parking; If all properties on one street are owned but by two different players, both owners can build up to 2 houses on each property and split the rent; players can negotiate for immunity against rent; After passing GO, players with houses/Hotels must pay utilities fees to whoever owns the electric and water companies (this is a good deterrent for those overly aggressive hotel builders)

I love Monopoly and have a great WWII version of the game as well as a PC version so I can play whenever and work on my negotiation and auction skills. I love auctioning properties, especially when all players' funds are low. I can get a great property at a heavy discount. It's also a great game to train people on money management.

Monopoly Gripes
I love Monopoly. I have been playing it for over 65 years with my brothers when I was about 8 or 10 years old and then with my children and now with my grandchildren but there are a few gripes I have.
First there should be a way to keep the money organized. While trying to concentrate on the game watching who is buying what property and who is landing on your property the money tends to get mixed up and some of the bills end up underneath one another in the wrong piles. It also makes it hard to check how much money you have if you want to by some property. Some people put the money partially under the board but it still gets all mixed up. Sometimes it ends up to far under the board where it’s impossible to get it without having to lift up the board disturbing the playing pieces and the houses and hotels.
Second when you use the banker boxes the slots for the money are two close together and not deep enough. When you place money in or take it out of the box you can’t help but disturb the other adjacent bills and they fall out or it is hard to find the correct slots to put the money in. The banker tray is no better.
Another one of my gripes is when rolling the dice when the board has a lot of houses and hotels on it the dice usually knocks them off and you have to straighten them out.

Fun, fun, fun.(for all four hours!)
I love this game. Unlike most reviewers i enjoy the fact that this game takes some time. The heart of this game is in the negotiations. When i play with my mom she always buys the propertys i want, then goes broke, and i buy them from her. CLASSIC

Negotiation game
I've been playing monopoly with the speed die recently which does make the game move faster, however I still find the game really boring. It takes way too long to play and you usually know who is going to win well before the game is over.
The only skill required in the game is negotiation, and you only get to utilize that skill for a couple of minutes over the course of a game that takes over an hour to play...
Overall, don't bother with this classic. There are much better games available today.
