 Fantastic game

LOVE this game!!!!!

by Lee  (Dec 31 2008)

 Challengingly Easy Fun

Can be played by all ages, at our house, 7, 9, 58, & 84 year olds all enjoyed the challenge and had fun learning and playing together. Seems to move faster and have more avenues for change than scrabble.

 Best game ever invented

This is the most fabulous game. Only negative comment is the the dictionary should be taken from the Scrabble dictionary as there are many words you can make but the game won't allow it because the dictionary doesn't allow them.

 5 stars-EXCELLENT

I really wish that you(Hasbro) would get the computer game back on the market!!! I know at least ten people that would buy it. And another thing IF you do --there needs to be a way to dispute 'maven' as I play against the computer. I'm 81 and I really play the game --probably 4 or 5 hours a day and never tire of it. My whole family loves this game!

 On Line Version !!

Best game ever - I used to play every day with my mom in another state on line. When will it ever come back - we'd be willing to pay an annual fee to be able to play Upwords on line.

Easy and Hard, all in one

You can make this game as challenging as you want. Stay with small sight words or move to unusual words you don't often hear or see. Best game ever! Like Tetris in college at 2am only with another player!!

 A Sharp 87-Year Old

My 87 year old Mom and I have been playing Upwards every week for years and years now. We ALWAYS have a great time playing. We keep our minds active and (with the help of a dictionary) learn new words every time. We like the large tile version.

 Love it!

We sit around playing this for hours during the holidays and it never gets old - even when playing with the in-laws ;).

 The best!

As an avid Scrabble player (I once took it on a week long camping trip on an island in the middle of a lake), I was so thrilled to find out about Upwords this last year. At first I didn't think I liked it, because there wasn't an advantage to making longer words, or using Z's & Q's. In fact, a long word was harder to change. But after playing it 2-3 more times, I was hooked! I found it SOOOO much more interesting to try to change 2 or 3 words at once! In fact last night I was able to change CANDIDA to SALTINE which changed CRAW to CREW (and I had been certain that when my mother put CANDIDA down there'd be no changing it!) Boy, was that fun! (Serious Upwords players will relate to my excitement :) ). As a busy homeschooling mother of 7, I don't have much time to play, but I do whenever I get a chance. If no one else is willing to play, I just play against myself. That way I'm sure to win! :-) Or I just make it part of my children's language arts lesson, and make them play with me. :-) They are all very good at it, in fact! (6 of the 7, ages 6-18; the 3 year old will be indoctrinated in the coming years). Though after playing it you find Scrabble feels different at first, I recommend them both to anyone who loves working with words, like me!

Bring Back Computer Version of Upwords

WHEN will Hasbro bring back the Computer version of UpWords?!

by Barb  (Aug 07 2006)

We do it on the computer!

My sister and I discovered upwards as one of MSN's computer games you can play online! We are hooked! We have webcams and play the game every chance we get, and since we live about a 1000 miles apart, this is just like playing together!

 Our Favorite Board Game

My husband and I play this game every chance we get. We both just love it. We've even taken it with us on cruises. People will approach us when they see us playing the game and ask, "What is that?" People are just fascinated by the game and it seems that hardly anybody has ever heard of it.

 Like Father and Son

My son and I love Upwards! We both enjoys words, and we have great battles. But, unfortunate for me, my son wins far more often than I do. It's a game you can alway improve at.

I disagree the the reviewer above who says the person going first has the advantage. As a matter of fact, just the opposite is the case sometimes.

 Game Guy

Upwords blends word knowledge with gaming strategy - a nice mix. Key to the game's freshness is that players can change a word by placing additional tiles atop letter tiles already on the board, so game spaces that are already used remain available for future turns. This keeps things way fresher than Scrabble. And since you score more points for stacked tiles (up to 5 high) the scoring (and the tension) increase as the game progresses.

 Great game

I picked it up fromg garage sale in the afternoon, and I like the slight variation from Scrabble. Still love the classic Scrabble, though.

 unfair advantage!!

I have enjoyed the game for a long time but recently realized that when playing with 2 players, the person who starts the game first always gets one additional turn with a few extra tiles. This person almost always will win because they get one last chance to make big points in that extra turn. Other than that....fun!

 upwords

WHEN will Hasbro bring back the Computer version of UpWords?! We miss it so!

 Great fun

We love Upwords. It is so challenging. My family is so hard to win against. I have one question, though. Can a person simply add a word ending with "s" already on the board? For instance to spare....add ees to the "S" in order to get rid of all their tiles at the end of the game. I did not think so, but my husband did. Help?!? Again, we love the game

 Better than scrabble

I have been playing Upwords now for over 2 years. I cannot go back to playing scrabble which is so one dimensional in comparison.

In upwords there is a whole extra dimension of strategy that is not possible in Scrabble. For one thing you can actually make up to 3 words at the same time when placing tiles on the board. I have even found it possible theoretically to make as many as five words at the same time if the letters on the board and in your hand are exactly the right combination.

This can never really be possible in a game like Scrabble. For this reason I find without question or doubt that Upwords is more challenging than Scrabble can ever be.

 Upgrade UpWords

My husband and love to play UpWords. Different than Scrabble, but just as challenging. Excellent game! My dissapointment is in the quality of the game parts. The plastic tiles are too light weight, making them easy to knock over and just hard to handle. We have a very old game and the tiles are larger and heavier...however it has only 68 tiles and a smaller board. Give us a quality version of this fun game ...PLEASE.

 Two Tiles Up

My husband and I recently purchased this game and can't seem to get enough of it. As challenging as Scrabble but a more level playing field since each tile is worth either 1 or 2 points. We have already recommended this game to friends and family.
